The MDU is always looking for new and exciting benefits to offer members, helping you further your careers, increase the scope of your learning, and become the best doctors you can be.

As part of this ongoing commitment we've teamed up with indextra, an innovative organisation that allows subscribers to tap into a huge library of knowledge via an app containing digital versions of clinical textbooks and titles from medical publishers around the world.

Now, MDU members can get an exclusive discount on the usual subscription price, with the added bonus that the first two months' subscription is absolutely free:

  • 40% off for MDU members
  • 55% off for members in a GP practice with 100% GROUPCARE membership.

See our website for full details on how indextra can help you!

indextra is also providing free access to the BNF for all MDU members (NHS employees) in England, Scotland and Wales.

Here, the founders of indextra explain a bit more about what the partnership offers and how it can help you with your ongoing learning, whatever stage you're at in your career.

What is indextra?

indextra: We're a Swedish company, founded in 2002, that has formed a collaboration with world-leading medical publishers to offer a unique library of publications in your pocket, providing an exclusive collection of more than 900 titles through the indextra app available on phones, tablets or computers.

The service provides unlimited access to all included titles for a fixed subscription fee - similar to the Netflix/Spotify models most people are familiar with.

Our mission is to transform the way medical professionals access knowledge, offering sources they trust through an easy-to-use mobile platform.

How does it work?

indextra: The library is accessible via the indextra app on mobile phone, tablet or computer. In the app, users can search, sort, mark and save titles and facts according to their needs.

The library contains popular titles including the BNF, the Oxford Handbook series, the Maudsley Prescribing Guidelines and the NICE guidelines. Some of the key publishing houses in the library include Oxford University Press, Wiley, Cambridge University Press, Royal Pharmaceutical Society and many more.

Titles are listed by specialty, and users can organise the specialties to meet their specific needs. Users can filter their search across all titles, bookmark their favourites and make notes, just as they would in a textbook. It's also available offline, meaning the library is accessible whenever it's needed - whether that's in class, on ward rounds, in clinical practice or anywhere else.

How does it benefit members?

indextra: We want to help you make the right diagnosis and treatment decisions by providing validated and trusted medical knowledge when you need it.

The depth and breadth of the indextra library can contribute to your continuous learning and career development. You will find books to suit your needs at all levels, from students and training grades through to the most experienced practitioners and consultants.

We're also helping doctors further afield - when you subscribe, we'll match your commitment by giving a free subscription to a doctor in the developing world.
